Apply for a Scholarship

 
To apply for a Research Scholarship:

Applicant Must
  • Be a current member of AAUS (student or full member). Please review the difference in a member and AAUS scientific diver described in the FAQs here .   Perspective applicants can join at www.aaus.org/join . Please note that there is a 24hr delay between membership application and full access to the scholarship application.
  • Be accepted and enrolled in a Master's program (for the Master's Program award) or a Ph.D. program (for the Ph.D. program award).
  • Submit online application form below. Note: You MUST login with your AAUS membership credentials.
  • Submit a proposal of 3 to 5 pages describing the research methods, significance of the research, and a budget (if part of a larger budget, specify how AAUS funds will be spent).  Must be uploaded through submission form below. Format Notes: maximum length five pages, including references - single-spacing, 11 point font, one inch margins, figures welcome; include department and school affiliation in header text. NOTE: Any diving to be conducted for the proposed research must be conducted under the auspices of an AAUS-sanctioned program. If applicant is working under an non-AAUS organization, please contact the AAUS Scholarship Chair ([email protected]) for permission to proceed.
  • A letter of support from a faculty advisor (requested within the application portal)
  • Agree to write an article for the E-Slate, a news publication of AAUS, describing the proposed research within one year of scholarship award.
  • Present the results of their research at an AAUS symposium or other scientific meeting within one year of the projects completion.

 

Research Scholarship Application

To apply for the FINSS Scholarship:

Applicant Must
  • Identify as a member of a traditionally underrepresented group who, under normal circumstances, may not receive scuba diving instruction or would struggle due to financial barriers or other hardships.
  • Be a current member of AAUS (student or full member).   Perspective applicants can join at www.aaus.org/join . If this posses a hardship, please contact at [email protected]. Please note that there is a 24hr delay between membership application and full access to the scholarship application. 
  • Must be connected to an AAUS Organizational Member; student, employee, volunteer, etc.
  • Submit online application form below. Note: You MUST login with your AAUS membership credentials.
  • Submit a one-page personal Statement that must include:
    • Reason for applying such as:
      Research or work/volunteer time that could require scientific diving. 
      How they have worked to get involved as demonstrated by extracurricular activities, community service and other work experience.
    • How these certifications (Open Water and Scientific Diving) will impact their current position.
    •  May include:
      o How you became interested in scientific diving
      o How have your past experiences contributed to who you are today and how do you hope to give back to / uplift your own community?
       
       Must be uploaded through submission form below..  There is no standard formatting required.
  • Letter of Recommendation from PI or supervisor for whom the applicant will be doing research or working under (requested in the application process).
  • Statement of Support from institutional DSO confirming they will continue on to scientific diver training (requested in the application process). 
    • This should include a basic description of timeline and logistics including but not limited to:
      o When the student will take the Open Water Course
      o When the student will participate in the scientific diving course
      o Any follow up field work / research the student may be able to participate in
  • List of up to three suggested dive shops/instructors for course with cost breakdown and possible timing.
  • List and cost of gear the student hopes to purchase with the remaining funds.
  • After the experience, the scholar will submit a short bio and summary of their experience for publication in the eSlate, as well as multimedia (photos, videos, etc.) for posting. 

 

FINNS Scholarship Application

To apply for the Flanagan Travel Award
You may apply for this award in addition to the research award or independently.

Applicant must:

  • Be a current member of AAUS (student or full member). Perspective applicants can join at www.aaus.org/join .Please note that there is a 24hr delay between membership application and full access to the scholarship application.
  • Be enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student.
  • Complete the form below.  Note: You MUST login with your AAUS membership credentials.
  •  Upload a proposal letter describing the professional benefits to be derived from attending an AAUS meeting and a budget for travel expenses requested from AAUS.
  • A letter of support from a faculty advisor (requested in the application process).
